USE OF A TEST BED
The technology used in cars is evolving as much as their
performance, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to run
an engine in a workshop in the same way as it runs on the
road or track. The cause is an increasing complexity of engine
management and the proliferation of electronic systems of
vehicle control which exclude any possibility of use outside
of normal road conditions. Under these restrictions, engine
optimisation, the teaching demonstration vehicle operation or
even the reproduction of faults becomes impossible. The need
to exactly recreate the driving conditions makes it essential
to use a specialised, modern, precise and reliable measuring
instrument.

AUTOSCAN 4X - FI250 & FI500
Autoscan 4X is a roller test bench for 2 and 4 wheel drive cars. It benefits from ‘Fi Technology’ (low
inertia) : hollow rollers and reduction of the rotating parts, which allows a reduction in the total inertia
moment whilst remaining physically compact.
This technology, associated with high speed electronic management, ensures a very accurate and
extremely reactive control of the load applied to the vehicle : the instructions changes in stabilised
mode are clear and precise, but it is in transient mode (acceleration) that the AutoScan Fi capacities
appear : thanks to the Fi technology, the load applied is controlled by a user defi ned road law without
shift or time lag, which ensures absolutely exact reproduction of real conditions.
Autoscan 4X is equipped with one Eddy current brake for the Fi250 version and two for the Fi500
version.
ISO-SPEED SYSTEM
A mechanical link system, built around a
belt system, links the rollers together. That
way, all the wheels of the car under test are
geared at the same speed and so whatever
the transmission technology : 2 or 4 wheel
drive, viscous coupling, drived differential
(Aldex type for example), electronic systems
for driver aid (ESP etc)…the vehicle runs
on the test bench as it does on the road
in normal conditions. It doesn’t launch any
security systems or damaged running modes
which give incorrect measurements or which
make measurement impossible in the worst
cases !

AUTOSCAN 2X - Fi250 & Fi500
Autoscan 2X is the two roller version of the 4X model. This version offers the same technology and
the same efficiency as the Autoscan 4X and is most suited to testing two wheel drive cars for racing,
with no driver assistance systems acting on the engine management.
Autoscan 2X uses ‘Fi Technology’. It is equipped with one air cooled Eddy current brake for the Fi250
version, and two of the same Eddy current brakes for the Fi500 version.

EASY AND REPRESENTATIVE TESTS
Tests procedures for every requirement.
To manually optimise mapping points, to measure vehicle performances in real conditions, and
to draw the characteristic value curves (power, torque, temperatures, air/fuel ratio…) or to do a
rolling test, Autoscan Fi offers you easy to use procedures which are all adaptable to your technical
requirements.
Why test an engine in transient mode ?
On the road or on the track, an engine runs in transient mode almost constantly. It is essential to
reproduce this behaviour to work with representative engine behaviour. That is why Autoscan Fi offers
test procedures under controlled load acceleration defi ned by a ‘road law’.
Why apply a load under a road law ?
A dynamic road vehicle exerts forces on its environment to move forward, but it also undergoes
resistances. The principal ones are : the total weight of the vehicle involved, the resistance which the
ground applies to the wheels, the aerodynamic drag generated by the speed and fi nally the gradient
of the road. In short, a heavy and bulky vehicle will have more difficulty moving on rough ground and
up a hill than a light and aerodynamic vehicle moving on smooth and flat ground. To make it more
complicated, these resistances are not constant : they change according to the speed of the vehicle
and also they change in a non-linear way.
Autoscan Fi uses a road law to control the load brake and thus to create resistance. This mathematical
law takes into account the various settings and their changes according to the speed of the vehicle.
Thus, the engine tested undergoes the same resistance as in the real world.
AIR/FUEL RATIO MEASUREMENT
To obtain perfect combustion was always a top
priority in engine optimisation. One of the most
reliable means to control the effectiveness is
to measure the air/fuel ratio with a wide band
Lambda sensor. This type of sensor, connected
to the Rotronics signal conditioning module,
delivers exact information. The user sees a
real value of the air/fuel ratio, without ambiguity
nor approximation. The quickly reacting system
makes it possible to ensure the measurement
of transient stages and thus to superimpose the
richness curve on the torque curve.

ACCURATE AND REPEATABLE TESTS
Autoscan Fi uses precise sensors : 360 measurement points to
each turn of the rollers for the speed sensors and 0.02% error for
the load sensor which measures the braking torque. Connected
to a data acquisition and totally digital control of the brakes,
the unit constitutes an extremely precise and stable measuring
equipment : less than 0.1% of error overall!
This technology ensures optimal measurement quality whatever
the speed of the vehicle and the precision of the results is
independent of the level of measured power.
TYRE/ROLLER LINK
The quality of the tyre/roller link influences partly the precision and the
repeatability of measurements. The stability of the vehicle depends
almost entirely on the correct operation of the tyre. Rotronics paid
particular attention to these questions in the design of AutoScan
Fi : knurled rollers with strong casing for a better adherence and
mono-rollers at the wheel in order to preserve the most natural tyre
deformation.
A UNIVERSAL TEST BENCH
The rollers of AutoScan Fi are at the same level as the ground and give only one point of support for the tyre.
Thus it is possible to install vehicles with low ground clearance while preserving their original attitude. This
characteristic makes AutoScan Fi a particularly universal bench.
OPTIMAL COOLING
The cooling of the vehicle under test is of primary importance for
the integrity of the components. Powerful ventilators provide this
function and take part in the thermal stabilisation of the car. They
are ducted in order to perfectly diffuse the flow of air where it is
necessary to evacuate the heat.
AN EASILY EXPANDABLE DESIGN
AutoScan Fi consists of modules that were always envisaged to be adaptable after initial installation. It is
completely possible to add a load brake to a Fi250 model or to transform a 2X model into a 4X version.
The basic choice of the AutoScan Fi characteristics are not fixed at any point – the machine can be easily
upgraded.
SECURITY
The safety of vehicles and people should not be compromised : the
revolving elements are inaccessible, automated procedures prevent the
use of the bench as long as all the safety conditions are not satisfied
and emergency braking is almost immediate thanks to low inertia Fi
technology.
However, these systems are not an obstacle to effectiveness : with fast
and easy implementation, they adapt automatically to the vehicle.

COMPLETE AND EASY SOFTWARE MANAGEMENT
It is not necessary to be a data-processing specialist to control AutoScan
Fi. A few clicks are enough to use the software. User-friendly and simple
design does mean less efficient. Presentation of the data in real time,
results comparisons, report editing, permanent storage … the AutoScan
software is complete.
The setting of the tests is made through simple dialogue
boxes and a few seconds are enough to prepare a
procedure.
During the test, the curves are drawn on the screen in
real time, allowing the user the possibility of stopping
the procedure if there is an anomaly or for improving the
parameters of the tested vehicle.
Once the measurements are made, the results can be shown in the
form of curves, tables or statistics. Various recent or old tests can be
superimposed and easily compared. The data can be saved easily or
fed into an invaluable customer data base.
    The basic results and comments constitute the test reports. They
    can be saved, printed or be exported to other external systems.
    The AutoScan software, used in demonstration mode (free of
    charge and without time limit) makes it possible to read results
    obtained with the bench. A simple fi le transfer is enough to do
    this.
The software offers simulation results, from theoretical
calculations, but based on measured data. These results
make it possible to appreciate the improvements obtained in
real conditions or contribute to the explanation of particularly
abstract concepts.
A database gathers the identity of each customer, the associated
vehicle model and the design features useful for the test schedule.
The role of the database is to file the data along with all measurements
and the comments which are associated to them.
It is thus possible to control the evolution of a vehicle in time, to
compare results of different vehicles or to compare the performance
of the same model of vehicle used by different customers.

INNOVATION IN PROFESSIONAL SERVICE
AutoScan Fi also offers an OBD interface : the direct communication
between the bench and the car is from now a reality. Connection is done
by the connection of an interface on the diagnosis plug of the vehicle.
The AutoScan software is able to collect invaluable data without the user
needing to instrument the engine : engine speed, flow, pressure and
temperature of the air intake, engine temperature etc.
The OBD interface avoids long and expensive instrumentation (assuming
the instrumentation is not impossible!) : a simple connection ensures the
access to strategic and precise data. In certain cases, the OBD interface
can be used to validate the answer of the sensors concerned, such as
the flowmeter of air of admission for example.
Portable wireless computer system :
All the controls of the bench, as well as the visualisation
and analysis, can be carried out using a tablet type
laptop. The communication with the bench is ensured
by a WiFi wireless connection. The operator of the
bench is completely free to move around and can view
all the controls, procedures and data on the screen.
The calibration procedures are very easy
and fast, thanks to a specific procedure in
the software. It is very easy to preserve a
precisely measuring instrument that gives
repeatable results. The operation does not
take more than 10 minutes.
AutoScan Fi is equipped with an environment
monitor SML which measures the characteristics
of the surropunding air : pressure, humidity
and temperature. It transmits them in real time
to the software which corrects the results. The
Environment monitor SME offers in addition a
system of data acquisition : four thermocouple
inputs for the measurement of temperatures and
four other analogue inputs for any other type of
acquisition, such as measurement of pressure
for example.
All the operations necessary for the test schedule
are done by the user from the driver’s position in the
vehicle. A wired remote control provides this function.
The radio remote control is available, and allows a
greater freedom of movement and a certain comfort
of use.

EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES
Vehicle cooling unit :
Available in 2 versions, 16000m3/h and 32000m3/h flow.
The cooling fan assures engine safety (overheating) and helps at repeatability by
giving stabilised temperatures.
Workshop cabinet :
Pratical, solid and attractive, it accomodates computer
hardware and all test bed acessories (engine speed kit, temperature probes, ear
protectors...)
Retractable stabilising rollers at the front :
The stabilising rollers (delivered
fixed as standard) are moved inside the bench. AutoScan becomes a pure mono-
roller bench and offers the optimal tyre contact. It is possible to retract the rollers
before the installation of the vehicle in order to make AutoScan compatible with
cars with very low ground clearance or having low front surfaces.
Environmental monitor SME 301 :
The SME 301 has the same functions as
the SML 101, but also offers four type K thermocouple inputs, and four 0-10 volt
analogue inputs for complementary sensors (pressure, lambda...) in order to
express power output and torque in accordance with current standards.
A large range of specialized sensors is available for comprehensive data acquisition,
measuring for example, cylinder head temperatures beneath the spark plug, or
fluid temperatures (sealed sensors).
OBD vehicle interface :
Allows engine data acquisitions (Engine speed, water
temperature, air admission pressure, etc ) from the diagnostic OBD connector of
the vehicle without mechanical intervention or complicated instrumentation.
Engine speed kit :
The engine speed kit comprises a sensor designed to measure
and transmit an engine’s ignition or injection frequency to the data acquisition card.
Thanks to this sensor, the software automatically calculates the transmission ratio
by synchronising engine speed and roller speed signals. The equipment is supplied
with different measurement devices (induction clamp, piezo-electric sensor for
diesel engines, ignition coil measurement circuit...) allowing its adaptation to the
majority of automobiles.
Air Fuel ratio measurment kit CMR 101 :
The CMR 101 Kit allows the wide-band
O2 sensor (UEGO) management, a digital display of the calculated values like
average richness, air / fuel ratio, air excess (lambda) or oxygen rate. This data is
transmitted to the software and allows the Air / Fuel ratio or lambda curves to be
drawn according to the engine speed.
Gas analyzer :
Available in four or five gas versions (CO,CO2, O2, HC, optionally
NOx ), this analyser also calculates corrected CO content, lambda and the
stoichiometric ratio. It can moreover input engine speed and oil temperature data
in order to adjust the fuel mixture under various regimes and engine loads.
Portable wireless computer system : “
tablet PC” type, with touch screen and
Wifi radio link. Radio receiver in the test bed cabinet for the cordless transfer of
measurments between the test bed and the computer.
Radio remote control :
Industrial cordless remote control case drives the whole
test bed components, included the emergency stop.
