INFOSCAN
The ROTRONICS Newsletter
Edition 2007 /1 - May
Summary
The first edition of Infoscan appeared a few months ago and we got lots of great reactions.
We are happy to note that the form and the contents of Infoscan reflected the readers’
expectations, so we will proceed in the same way. Suggestions were also sent to us which
we will try to take into account, in order to fix any teething problems and to keep the initial
spirit of the project going.
It is with great pleasure that we present the second edition of Infoscan. To us it is as important
as the first because it symbolises the continuity of the project. We hope you enjoy it and see
you soon with the next edition!

Partnership Rotronics / DSI
DSI (Delta Service Industry) is a company based in Belgium, specialised in radiotracing techniques
applied to internal combustion engines. It develops and markets products dedicated to cars for
measuring the engine wear, oil consumption, dilution of gas oil and the rate of ventilation of the
lubricants. Its main markets are in industrial R&D and high level competition.
DSI decided to build a test center, in order to be more independent in its development work and
to widen its service capability by offering the use of engine tests cells to its customers. The new
buildings are close to completion and Rotronics will soon install the first equipment: an eddy current
load brake capable of measuring 300 hp, engine trolley equipped with a Staübli connection plate,
conditioning fluids, data acquisition, specific measurement equipment and Kronos V4 management
software.
As of the first discussions, common points appeared between DSI and Rotronics: small, reactive
and flexible company structure, specialised sphere of activity, common customers, independent
development of the products. The idea to combine competences thus appeared rather quickly.
This joint approach is cemented by shared participation in the Testing Expo Show 2007. The DSI/
Rotronics partnership aims to offer the clients total measurement solutions which are powerful and
adapted to the various needs and constraints for the customers. This fusion was primarily made
possible thanks to the complementary nature of the products and the compatibility of the markets. If
you have a measurement project using of radio operator tracing on bench, think of consulting DSI...

Aile
AILE, Association of Local Initiatives for Energy linked with Cuma of the West and Ademe Brittany, has
offered for several years tests on an engine test bench for agricultural machinery. The characteristic
of this service is that it is mobile: the technician, Romain Blanjacquier, drives 40.000 km and carries
out more than 750 tests per year!
The objective of this step is to carry out the diagnosis locally in order to reduce the expense and
to reduce the of exploitation use of greenhouse gasses. For that Aile works primarily on the fuel
efficiency.
The association recently obtained a new Rotronics measuring instrument: Agriscan. But the project
was not as simple as delivering a standard test bench. Indeed, from its experiment, Aile developed
particular working methods. The working tool needed to be adaptable and to specific circumstances.
For that the association made a custom truck able to accommodate the users of agricultural machinery,
and to offer an ergonomic workspace to integrate the Agriscan. On this point Aile and Rotronics
worked in collaboration in order to direct the design of the frame of the trailer and to adapt Agriscan
to the installation. The constraints were numerous, particularly with regard to the distribution of the
mass, but after several working weeks, the mobile bench is operational today. From its capacity of
expertise and its experiment, Aile also took part in the software development on strategic points such
as the curves of reference, the data base and the analysis of the results.
It should be noted that other companies also use the Agriscan bench in a similar way: Top Machine
40 (attached to the FD Cuma of the Landes), the FR Cuma Bourgogne.

Campus Automobile of Spa Francorchamps
GFR & PFI
Due to the activities offered, the CASF had to be equipped with a top-of-the-range automobile roller
dyno that could also be used for teaching, that was compatible with the majority of road vehicles and
especially able to accomodate GT type competition cars
To answer the technical requirements, Rotronics offered the Autoscan Fi in its X4 version. Its Iso-
speed system, its good diameter rollers, its safety equipment and its operating software made it
possible to answer the basic request but it was necessary to go further and offer a bench which
corresponds to the exact requirements of the campus: the software Kronos V4 in conjunction with the
Sequencer module makes it possible for the users to define their own test procedures and investigate
standardized pollution cycles. The other important point was to be able to accomodate very powerful
competition vehicles: Autoscan already has a natural aptitude for testing this type of car, in particular
with its mono-rollers which ensure an excellent connection between wheel and roller and ensure
it is possible to test very low ground clearance vehicles. But to absorb the level of required power,
an Eddy current brake cooled by water replaced the original aircooled brake. It is thus possible to
absorb up to 600 HP continually, without time constraint. The cooling ventilation had to undergo
some modifications too : the air is directly drawn away and the distance between the ventilator and
the vehicle is adjustable in order to optimize the effect of cooling according to dimensions of the
vehicle tested. Additional mobile ventilators allow the cooling of side radiators.
Being a very specific project, it made it possible to Rotronics engineers to innovate new technical
solutions, always with respect for the requirements of the customer, in particular financially. For that
we thank all the team for the CASF for the confidence that they gave to us.

Placed at the centre of the famous road racing area of
Spa Francorchamps, the Automobile Campus was born
from the association of three organisations: Forem, the
University of Liege and the University of Aachen.
This new facility offers courses related to various
automobile trades and uses the motor sports as a
teaching support. Besides teaching the establishment
offers specific training and exchanges with professionals
involved in motorsports.
It is under the auspices of Overmarsh Engineering Ltd, the
UK partner of Rotronics, that Rotronics was requested for the
supply of two dyno benches for karting engines. The first was
delivered to GFR Engines and the second at to PFI Ltd.. The
two companies are involved in various local, European and
world championships.
The benches are standard Dynakarts to which special
equipment has been added: Kronos V4 software with the
sequencer module in order to create specific tests procedures
and cycles, a CEA201 actuator to automatically control the
throttle during a test procedure, a cooling fan that has its speed
controlled in relation to the engine speed (with a capacity
of 120km/h), a compact fluid system allowing control of the
water engine temperature and an automatic choke control
system which simulates choking of the engine which is used
to lubricate these two stroke engines during races.
These benches will be used in the development of current
engines and preparing the development of future engines. In
time, the use of the bench will be directed towards simulation
of real conditions at the time of strategic phases of laps, such
as acceleration at the exit of corners.

Thank you with all for your collaboration !
Mader Racing
The project of completely rebuilding the engine test cell was decided upon quickly and with very
constraining timing plan (due to the customer’s competition work), Rotronics mobilised all possible
techniques and people to deliver the project (design, manufacture, installation on site, commisioning)
in less than 2 months! All the Rotronics team is honestly rather proud of the service carried out, the
more so that it could be done without penalising other projects in progress. We warmly thank Mader
Racing for having confidence in us with a difficult technical challenge and also for supporting us in
bringing it to a conclusion, particularly on site.

Mader Racing, based in Gland,
Switzerland is an engineering company
specialising in the development and
the manufacture of power units for
competition. It was created in 1972 by
Heini Mader, and has formed part of the
Mecachrome group since 2004. Involved
in numerous leading edge programs,
Mader designed of the engine and gear
box of the current GP2 project.
Recently Mader Racing decided to
entirely rebuild one of its two engine test
cells.
The project of modernisation was entrusted to Rotronics, and primarily relates to the test facilities use
of Kronos V4 management software and also a fluid system allowing control of cooling fluids, oil and
fuel. This part represented a challenge for several reasons: full management of 3 fluids on only one
system, design and manufacture of several special elements (covers, oil filter etc), adaption of the
unit to existing circuits, flow levels and the power required (the bench has a capacity for absorption
of 900 HP), regulation speed and variety of the engines to be tested (in line engines, V-engines,
no cold starting). The result is as follows: temperature controlled engine with capability for heating
before starting and separate management of each bank of cylinders, oil temperature control, fuel
temperature control, draining procedures, purges and rinsing of the circuits, measures fuel flow, oil
and blow-by.
This new equipment means for example that Mader
Racing can simulate 24hour races on the bench
for LMP2 engines by guaranteeing all the fluids
are at the same temperatures as on the track. The
development of the engines is carried out under real
conditions of use and is what makes it possible to
reduce adjustment times, to be more precise with
technical choices and to still record the level of
quality of the delivered engines.
